Redheads: Art Strikes Back

Redheads, Australia’s beloved match brand, held a competition in 2025 to celebrate their 80th anniversary. Artists were invited to redesign their iconic packaging based on three different themes:

  • Celebrate Redheads’ place in Australian culture.

  • Spark a vision for the next 80 years.

  • Re-imagine the infamous Ms. Redhead.

Winners had their artworks printed on limited edition matchboxes.

…I did not win, but this was my entry.

I chose the theme, ‘celebrate Redheads’ place in Aussie culture’, drawing inspiration from my own camping trips up in the Victorian High Country. After finishing a long day of hiking, I have fond memories of sitting around a campfire - or a trangia circle - toasting marshmallows and telling stories. I wanted my artwork to capture the shared experience of camping in the Australian bush. The Space and Safety matchbox design series of the 1960s and 70s particularly inspired me. I wanted to see how my own digital art style could sit among them - especially at such a small scale.

Looking back at the other entries - and with a year’s distance - I think I could have leaned more into Redheads’ iconic red. I am still happy with the artwork, but I wish I’d been bolder with the use of space.
